How We're Different From the Big Names You'll Compare Us To

You’ll come across three main types of moving companies when you start looking. Here’s how we sit against each:

Online moving marketplaces

They take your booking and pass it to a third-party carrier. You don’t always know who’s actually moving you. With us, the consultant who quotes is part of the team that drives the truck.

Big heritage moving brands

Solid operators with branch offices and decades of history. The trade-off is that you’re paying for corporate overhead. Our model is leaner: we run weekly trucks through Gqeberha rather than maintaining a full branch, which keeps your price down without sacrificing service.

Quote-comparison sites

They send your details to five movers and take a referral fee. You spend a week fielding phone calls from companies you’ve never heard of. With us, one inventory submission, one tailored quote, decision made.

The Three Moves Gqeberha Does Most

Across thousands of bookings, three move types dominate our PE schedule:

The Long-Distance Relocation

Mostly Gauteng-to-Gqeberha (retirement, sea change, family return) or PE-to-Cape Town (career semigration). Usually full trucks or large shares with packing and All-Risk insurance. Our long-distance service connects Gqeberha with every major city on a weekly schedule.

The Shared Load Saver

Smaller moves, younger movers, downsizers. Our shared load option means you only pay for the cubic metres you actually use on a truck heading your way. A noticeably cheaper way to move long-distance than booking a dedicated truck.

The Local Across-Town Move

Central to Summerstrand, Walmer to Lorraine, Newton Park to Lovemore Heights. Our local home moves use right-sized trucks and crews who know the city.

The Services Behind Every Gqeberha Move

Almost every move involves at least one of these:

Why Gqeberha Is One of SA's Most Active Moving Markets

Before the moving stats, a quick history lesson, because the name change still confuses half our long-distance customers. The city was originally named Port Elizabeth in 1820 by Sir Rufane Donkin, the acting Governor of the Cape Colony at the time. He was tasked with overseeing the landing of around 4,000 British settlers at Algoa Bay, and named the new port town after his late wife, Lady Elizabeth Donkin, who had died of fever in India in 1818 at only 28. He also commissioned the stone pyramid still standing on the Donkin Reserve in her memory. The settlement grew up around the older Fort Frederick (1799), the oldest British building in southern Africa, became an official town in 1861, and was upgraded to city status in 1913 after the Kimberley Railroad spurred development of its port.

In February 2021, the South African Geographical Names Council formally renamed the city Gqeberha, an isiXhosa name derived from the Baakens River that runs through it. The change was part of a broader programme to replace colonial-era names with local heritage names, and the rename was published in the Government Gazette on 23 February 2021. Locals still split between the two: some call it PE, some Gqeberha, many use both interchangeably. Officially, Gqeberha is the city’s name. Practically, search engines, signage and old timers still recognise Port Elizabeth, which is why we use both throughout this page.

Now, the moving market itself. The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality (which includes Gqeberha plus Despatch, Kariega/Uitenhage and surrounding areas) carries 1,190,496 residents according to Census 2022. It sits inside an Eastern Cape that grew 10.2% to 7.2 million people in a decade, and is the only metro municipality in the province. Statistics South Africa attributes 28% of internal migration to paid employment, and Gqeberha attracts moves on every side of that equation: automotive engineers heading to the Coega IDZ, retirees swapping the Highveld for Summerstrand, students cycling through Nelson Mandela University, and corporate relocations tied to the two ports (PE Harbour and the deepwater Port of Ngqura).

Frequently Asked Questions:

What's the actual cost of moving in Gqeberha?

It depends on three things: how much you’re moving, how far it’s going, and which extras you want. Local Gqeberha moves cost less than long-distance relocations, and shared loads cost less than dedicated trucks. Your quote is priced to your inventory, not a flat rate. Send us your details and we’ll come back with an itemised, no-pressure price.

It’s roughly 1,050 km. Most moves are done within a few days of collection. A dedicated truck gets a tighter delivery window; a shared load has a small flexibility window because the truck may have other stops. Your consultant will confirm a real window when you book.

Yes, regularly. Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Humansdorp and the Garden Route (George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay) are on our weekly Gqeberha schedule.

Built into the plan. We check the schedule before collection and offload, and time things so you’re not loading during a Stage 6 cut. If a lift-shaft or alarm system needs generator backup, we’ll flag it upfront.

No. Walmer Heights, Lovemore Heights, gated complexes near Coega, the full range. We handle access paperwork, vehicle permits and security check-ins as part of the job. Tell us the estate name when you book.

Yes. Short or long-term, at either end of the move, with collect-and-deliver service so your goods aren’t handled twice.

Standard care is included. For valuable or fragile items, especially long-distance, All-Risk insurance is recommended. Priced upfront, never bundled invisibly.

Earlier is better, especially for peak summer. Short-notice moves are part of our work though, so if your dates are tight, call. We’ll tell you straight what’s possible.
