Remove the cushions
The first thing you need to do is to remove all of the cushions from the sofa, including the back and base ones. This will not only make it a lot easier to move the sofa around, but it will also make it much lighter. Cushions can weigh quite a lot, so remove these and place them in an area where they will not get dirty or damaged.

Measure the couch’s dimensions
Use your measuring tape to measure the dimensions of the couch. Then measure the door to determine if it will fit through it without dismantling or not.


Remove the legs
If it is possible to remove the legs of your couch, then do this. Sofa legs often get in the way and stop the sofa from fitting through the door. Make sure that you put the legs and any screws somewhere safe where they won’t get lost.

Remove doors if necessary
If the couch isn’t fitting through, try removing the doors on the doorways in order to create more space. It might be worth doing this anyway in order to prevent damage to any of the doors.

To remove the door, tap out the hinge pins or unscrew the screws holding the hinges in place. Shift the door sideways to remove it from its hinges.

Pull back the carpet
If you have carpeted bedrooms you can create more space by pulling back the carpet around the doorways. This will create more space vertically for you to fit the couch through. The carpet can then be easily placed back down afterwards. 

Manoeuvre the couch to fit better through the doorway

Wear gloves and be careful when lifting the heavy couch. There will need to be at least two of you lifting the couch. Angle the couch in a way that will best fit through the door. Slide it through the doorway and manoeuvre it whilst lifting, if it is a corner sofa to fit through.
