Downsizing
Often when elderly people move house they are downsizing. This means that they won’t have as much space as they did before to keep all of their belongings. It is best to start sorting through all of your belongings the moment you know that you are moving, getting rid of anything you don’t need so that when the removal company delivers everything to your new house you can start unpacking and you don’t have to worry about there being no space.
Rent a storage unit
If you are downsizing but don’t have enough time to go through everything or if you aren’t sure what you want to get rid of then it might be a good idea to get a storage unit. This way some of your belongings that you don’t need or use regularly can be taken there and kept until you or a family member is ready to sort through them.
Research moving companies
You will need to book a removal company to help you transfer your possessions from one house to another. Do some research into different removal companies, their prices, and what they offer. Some removal companies offer packing services, which can be done on the same day of the move. This means they will bring all of the packing materials to your home, pack up your belongings, put all of them in the removal truck, and then unpack the other end. This option is great for elderly people who aren’t able to do the packing or heavy lifting easily. It will be more expensive than the basic service of the removal truck, but it will save you a lot of time and effort. You will also know that your belongings are packed as safely as possible, as it is done by professionals who have the right equipment and experience.

Read on as we share with you how to do just that.
The last piece of advice we can give is to prepare a bag for moving day with all the essentials you will need for at least that day and night and maybe a couple more after that. Pack clothes, medicines, and any toiletries you may need. This way if you are unpacking all of your belongings yourself or it isn’t being done straight away, you will have peace of mind that you have everything you need for at least a couple of days whilst you are in the midst of all those boxes.
If you are worried about moving, then speak to the removal company you will be using. They will be able to put your mind at ease and answer any questions you might have..
Moving house can be hard for elderly people and it can often come with mental challenges too as there are often emotional attachments to the home you are moving from. Ask friends and family to help you prepare for the move. Make sure any paperwork is done for both the old and new house and ensure that you are scheduling utilities and other things you will need to start as soon as you move into the new home. This way you can get settled without having to worry about all of that. .
